Faces of FASHIONABLE: Bethelehem

Faces of FASHIONABLE Leather

This is a part of our Faces of FASHIONABLE series. The inspirational women behind our products have courageous stories of overcoming, and we are honored to share them with you.

Next up: meet Bethlehem (or "Betty" to her friends!) Betty runs an amazing business in Ethiopia that employs over 200 women. After getting her degree and working in government for six years, she became an entrepreneur and opened a craft shop. But that wasn't enough - she wanted to make a difference in underprivileged women's lives. So she partnered with an NGO that was teaching HIV+ women to make jewelry, and hired over 100 of them for her store! Now she employs over 200, and has expanded her product offerings into leather and weaving as well.

Tell us more about your roleI am the founder and owner of my business. We started working with FASHIONABLE two years ago, and we respect and value the partnership we have in women empowerment business. I hope together we make a difference in many lives!!

When you’re not hard at work, what do you like to do in your free time? I am married and a mother of one and expecting a new baby in two months!

We believe that every one of us understands what it means to overcome, and we are all ABLE to find purpose in the work we do. What is something YOU are ABLE to do because of your work? I am very grateful to this God-given opportunity to make a difference in others lives. I am ABLE to know through my job why I'm in this world and what is my purpose is in life. And I am very happy... I figured out the only way to be happy in the world is bringing changes / differences in others lives.

The women in Bethlehem's business have created some of our favorite leather products, including the Debre Wallet and Zemen Tote. In addition to loving the beautiful products our partnership has introduced into our line, our team has been so encouraged by how much Betty’s business continues to grow and expand, all while serving women that face life-threatening illness and the continuing social stigma around HIV/AIDS. We are grateful there are people like Bethlehem in the world, and look forward to future endeavors with her and her team!
