1848: First Women’s Rights Convention - over 300 activists gather to fight for better opportunities for education + employment, as well as the right to vote (and the women’s suffrage movement begins!) 1868: National Labor Union - 1st organized labor advocacy group, pushes equal pay for equal work 1903: Women’s Trade Union League Established - created to unionize working women and advocate for improved wages + working conditions for women 1920: 19th Amendment Ratified - gives women the right to vote, after a 70 year battle 1935: National Labor Relations Act - workers have the right to discuss their pay 1963: The Equal Pay Act - federal law requiring employers to pay men & women equally for doing the same work 1964: Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act - federal law that prohibits employers from further discriminating on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, or national origin 1967: Executive Order 11375 - issued by President Lyndon Johnson as a step towards equal employment opportunity - prohibits gender discrimination by government contractors and requires affirmative action plans for hiring women 2009: Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act - federal law that expands worker’s rights to fight for pay discrimination and provides them with a longer period of time to file employment discrimination complaints 2015: Paycheck Fairness Act - comprehensive bill that strengthens the Equal Pay Act of 1963 - a strong piece of legislation we need to continue to fight for!
